5 Year Anniversary of the Big Blackout
It has been 5 years since the big blackout on the eastern seaboard. Do you remember where you were?
My son was born July 5th that year and he was a very sweet and easy going baby. On the 14th of August around 4:11 PM, Carla C. was helping me cleanup from hosting our second pre-natal (post having our babies) playdate. Our babies were all around 6-10 weeks old. She was one of the last ones to leave in the elevator from my condominium at Yonge and Sheppard before management decided to shut-down the emergency generator.
I ran to the tub and filled a big bowl with water and the bucket, knowing that living 9 floors up we may not have water in a few hours if there was no electricity to run the motor to pump water up in the building.
We went to sleep early that night-with the lights out there was nothing to do. In the morning my husband went out on the street to see what was going on and brough back bottled water and the most amazing sandwich I had ever had in my life. Thanks goodness for Pat’s Catering truck or whoever it was outside near our building.
The day kept getting hotter and it was too hot to stay in the apartment, I was worried my baby would get dehydrated. We walked around our neighbourhood, chatted with people we had never met, and then headed to a friends house for a bbq. Thankfully while we were out the power come back on and we will were able to go home and take showers, and all the normal day-to-day stuff you don’t really appreciate until it is taken away from you.
What did you do?
